Thanks guys!

I like angles over rounded body stiles, but this also seamed the fastest way to construct the car. I have never tried building anything like this before, but am pleased with the way its coming together. I can only work on the kart for a few hours a day after work, but figured as long as do something to it every day it should go pretty fast. that and to remeber "keep it simple stupid". I am actually ahead of schedule we will see if i can keep the pace up.

today was a slow day for the kart. sad smiley

just when I was about to start on the front end, my neighbor came over to chat. After a lengthy conversation he asked if i could fix his gate latch since i had the welder out. So across the street i went with it, an hour (and a few beers) later it was time to eat dinner.

the only thing i got done was the rear free wheel hub and bearings. I am using "compression bearings" (thanks Steve i did not know the technical term) on all the free wheels. As Steve told me tonight, this might end up being a better solution for the front wheels than the traditional mounting. Cheers to happy accidents!

Here is a picture of the bearings mounted without the hub so you can see what i'm talking about. Please give me some feedback on this approach.

Hi Michael,

Are your front wheels held on by just the 4 studs or have you got a spindle and bearings going through the actual wheel hub itself giving extra support??? If not then how secure is the wheel with the studs only??

Yes they are held on by the 4 bolts only. The wheel is very secure, better than I thought it would be in fact. I mounted them the same way is the rear wheels get mounted to the live axle. One thing to note on this setup is that the wheels take a little more prep when using hubs. You have to grind down an extra 3/4" from the inside of the wheel because the hub sticks out from the bearing socket. Not a big deal and does not affect the structural integrity of the wheel, but about an extra 20 minutes of work per wheel. you can see what I am talking about in this video I made, you can see the part where the nut goes on to the hub.

Dave,

Why are you using the hub on the front end?
Doesn't the stub axle fixed to the steering arm simply fit through the centre bearing of the Honda wheel? I'm not sure of the size of the existing wheel bearing. From some photos i have seen it would also be of a benefit to install some bracing/stiffening plates within the wheel hub to support he centre of the wheel.
I believe this is the way Steve built his wheels as well.

This video from Steve shows the front wheel and hub. My sketch above doesn't show the bearing.
The front wheel is approx 3.00 min in

I have edited this a couple of time as I'm using an iPad and it's slightly harder than using a PC. I hope the video link works.

Hi,

I understand that the front stub axles go through the centre of the wheel but it means using a 20 mm bolt and fabricating the rest of the stub axles.

I have ordered the 9x20x37 bearings ready buy then thought could I find and use a pre-made set up for ease. edit (update) Bearings arrived today and I have 20mm solid bar and 20mm 8.8 tensile bolts which I will probably use to fabricate my own stub axles as have had no response to the email I sent to the kart place.

I will get on to that next as I have already fitted the rear axle will floating type bearings on rear through the box section. Trying to locate a keyed 25mm hub at present as the driving hub, the free wheeling one is easy to buy.

Just a case of pressing the old 12mm bearings out of the wheels and in with the new 20mm ones.

The bearing that come with the CT90 are much smaller than the spindle shafts. I used the hubs because i thought it would be easier than trying to find bearings. they are very sturdy, and use thrust bearings instead of ball. It was very easy to put together, but took a little longer than expected.

I just took my first_(successful) ride the other day, I will try and post the crappy video from my phone when i can. Also not sure if anyone cares but i have it in 3D also, so if anyone is interested let me know and i will upload it.

Sorry for the late replies and lack of posting been CRAZY busy the last few weeks. Dont worry Kart is still getting work done when it can be. thumbs up

So Michael, how does it run?? Is it fast enough with your gearing?? Did you use a go-kart centrifugal clutch set up or torque converter??

I used a centrifugal clutch, and i can tell you that i will not have it for very long. acceleration from a stand still is MISERABLE and even the slightest incline and the kart needs to be pushed to get moving. But once moving this thing is fast. I have not been able to get to top speed yet as my street ends before getting there. The video I made got corrupted and wont play, if the weather is good today I will take a new video.

I have not touched my kart for a bit due to other commitments, managed to get some leaf springs today so well chuffed. Am planning on going straight for torque converter from the off especially now you have tried one. Your kart sounds fast and furious ha ha, will get mine sorted over the British winter.

shooting a new video got put on hold. I have to rethink the mount for the brake band, it got bent during a test ride and locked up. On a good note the brake it self works great!
